Design Philosophy
Designed to allow couples and families to cruise in safety and comfort through the use of innovative design, quality of finish, outstanding performance & sea handling ability, every Seawind catamaran is the product of a passionate and dedicated team of sailing professionals.
Seawind’s range of cruising catamarans are designed by Australians, uniquely for the purpose of allowing couples or families with limited or no cruising experience to safely and comfortably explore the bays, coastlines and islands and between Australia, Asia and across the Pacific.
Driven by renown founder and Australian cruiser Richard Ward, every Seawind catamaran model is capable of tackling the world’s oceans.
Richard and his team follow a simple successful formula – without compromise to build the best example of what a bluewater cruising boat should be, and allow anybody to feel safe and at home, regardless of the conditions, for extended time aboard…
The Australian coastline is one of the demanding in the world and the Seawind catamaran range is designed specifically to handle just this: the toughest of offshore conditions.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
S.E.A.W.I.N.D
Designed to allow couples or families with limited or no cruising experience to safely and comfortably explore the bays, coastlines and islands and between Australia, Asia and across the Pacific. The following design principles have been followed to offer the best experience at sea onboard what we think is the Perfect Pacific Cruiser:
Sails like a real sailboat
Engineered to endure
Anyone can operate
Weather protection at the helm
Indoor/Outdoor living
Natural ventilation
Don’t waste space
SAILS LIKE A REAL SAILBOAT
A decisive choice was made early to put sailing performance before pure volume, which is not the case of many modern catamaran designers. Placing the main beds above the bridge deck in smaller models rather than in the hull, allows narrower hull designs which cut through the water more efficiently and faster. The benefits of this are that you get to your destination faster and don’t become frustrated by the lack of performance after days at sea or in moderate to light winds.
ENGINEERED FOR ENDURANCE
All Seawind Catamarans are engineered to offshore standards, which bring peace-of-mind to all sailors. All hull to deck joins, bulkheads and shelving are fully glassed for maximum bonding strength and the longevity of your boat. All of it adds up to total comfort when sailing offshore in any weather. From the rig, to safety lines, to construction methods, Seawind Catamarans have always been slightly over-engineered for safety. These subtle safety features often go unnoticed, but ultimately mean you have a stiffer, safer and more reliable sailboat.
ANYONE CAN OPERATE
Catamarans sized between mid 30’s to mid 40 feet are easier to handle, easier to maintain and easier to manage than larger boats. They offer a good balance of comfort and low operational cost, and on a technical level are easier for an inexperiencd crew to handle. On Seawind catamarans, all lines and controls are led back to the cockpit and are optimised for solo or short-handed operation, and ease of use for novice sailors. This feature has enabled many of our owners to cruise as couples or single handed on countless ocean passages.
WEATHER PROTECTION
Dual helm stations offer 360 degree visibility, yet protection from the sun and foul weather. Twin helms allow the skipper to safely sail the boat in crowded conditions without the need to rely on a leeward spotter. The only twin helm design in the world that offers protection from the sun, rain and wind by being located behind a major bulkhead. Add to this, panoramic windows gives you complete visibility in bad weather, and the flexibility to steer from either side of the boat so you can properly trim your sails, or dock.
INDOOR / OUTDOOR LIVING
Enjoy the spaciousness and freedom of a clutter free cockpit without permanent furniture reducing the cockpit in size. When needed, add a foldaway cockpit table and deck chairs. Then use the cockpit as a work space for setting up equipment, or bring in fish to clean and wash away through the self training deck. You have the flexibility with an uncluttered cockpit to use however you need. Great for parties and larger guest numbers.
NATURAL VENTILATION
No need for expensive air-conditioning and heavy generators – with remarkable natural ventilation thanks to extra large opening windows in the saloon, hatches in the cabins, and the innovative removable tri-folding door, these boats are blessed with excellent ventilation. Seawind catamarans are designed to handle even the most extreme tropical conditions.
DON'T WASTE SPACE
The galley on a Seawind catamaran is akin to the Butler’s Kitchen in many modern homes – Cook your meals on the BBQ upstairs, and then keep your mess out of your living space and away from guests by hiding it in the open galley in the hull. This means you end up with a much larger galley with storage and preparation space, with the added bonus that your saloon lounge is huge and not impeded by a galley. The end result is a living area / lounge equivalent to a 50 footer and a galley that makes cooking for large groups a pleasure.
